Looking at Omeka sites

After learning about Omeka and all that we can really do with it was very interesting. I have used WordPress a good amount for the time that I have been at UMW. I would like to think I’m pretty good at it. But it is amazing when looking at the Omeka sites, how much more they have compared to a WordPress site.

The first Omeka made site that I looked at was John J. Audubon’s Birds of America. On the site, there are many different sections that you can look at. One overall section is the habits and habitats tab. underneath that tab are different tabs of birds that live in all the different habitats. There is an about tab that tells us about John J. Audubon, and there is also a tab if any of the viewers want more information.

The other Omeka site that I looked at was Fifteen Century Italian Art. This site was cool because of the interactive map. The main page on the website might have been a bit baren but once you visit the other tabs that changes. Then the interactive map gives detailed instructions on how to use it, it has a timeline that also interacts with the map as well, and it has so many different Italian artists for one to look at. This site uses Omeka very well.

These Omeka sites integrate posts with reading content with pictures and other forms of media. Omeka makes a website more of an experience than other platforms like WordPress.
